P.E.I. Retired Teachers Association:
PEI Schools: Old and New

It was suggested at the November 2010 PEIRTA AGM that we try to access and post images of Prince Edward Island School Houses, old and new. Rita MacNeill sends this first group of images. Please send additional images as jpg attachments via email to Bill Oehlke or send actual photos or photocopies via regular mail to Bill Oehlke, 155 Peardon Road, Montague, PEI C0A 1R0. I have a scanner, and will scan and post. Please provide as much information as possible with each submission: name of school, location, date, photographer, etc.

On March 28, 2023, I received the following email from Gregory MacDougall:

"I ran across your website and wondered if you would like these. This is a picture of my mother, Edith Myrna (Arthur) MacDougall, along with a paper clipping of the list of students she had in 1954 at Alma School (Alberton). My mother married Irwin MacDougall on December 30, 1957, in Summerside. They both died in 2017."

Some of you retirees may have been taught by Miss Arthur who later became Mrs. MacDougall.

Edith Myrna (nee Arthur) MacDougall.

Many thanks to David Wood, Vernon River Consolidated School Principal, who provides the images of the Vernon River Family of Schools as rendered on a school mural by Con Zaat. Thanks also to Con who has granted permission to post the images. He indicates that there were few photographs available at the time, and that he did the art work largely from descriptions provided by the more elderly bus drivers and members of the community.

Many thanks to Paul Sullivan, Southern Kings Consolidated School Principal, who allowed me to scan the images of the Southern Kings Family of Schools photos, courtesy of late Senator M. Lorne Bonnell. These images are of students and teachers, standing in front of or beside the school in the 1972-73 school year.

Many scans from Department of Education Annual Reports from 1951-1967 are now posted with permission from the Department of Education, via Maureen Flanagan-LeClair. Visit the links below. Simon Lloyd, was extremely helpful in locating these images for scanning from the Special Collections at UPEI's Robertson Library.
